This 2011 BMW X3 xDrive 35i reminds me of all the things I used to love about the X5--back when the X5 seemed smarter and sportier than any SUV on the planet. Now the X3 is channeling the big brother, feeling highly maneuverable and providing great handling and power for this class of vehicles. The steering and suspension aren't as sharp as a 3-series, but
for an SUV, the vehicle is quite crisp, especially in sport-plus mode. I'd like some paddle shifters to help manage the eight-speed auto 'box, but otherwise everything that is good about an X5 is here in a smaller overall package. The cargo and passenger room are similar, but weight is down versus the X5, so this 3.0-liter turbo provides good power for the size and poundage.
This vehicle must be equipped with a lot of fuel-economy nannies--I feel the accelerator pedal giving lots of feedback on acceleration as it initially holds back against being floor-boarded, and then kicks back against a consistent pedal to the metal. That makes it feel like it's not quite as slick as an X5, but it's a fine driver nonetheless.
For those who want to drive a 3-series but want the direct step-in, higher ride height and practicality of an SUV, the X3 is a strong choice.
